Ford XC Cobra
Hardie Ferodo 1000 Official Track Car (1978)
The Ford XC Cobra is perhaps one of the most famous and easily identifiable muscle cars ever produced. With its snow white paint job blue racing stripes and cobra decals, this was a car that would never be mistaken and has been idolised by motoring enthusiasts ever since.
Interestingly enough, the Ford XC Cobra was created due to an excess in XC models being available at the time which weren’t selling that well. The idea to paint them in the now iconic Cobra scheme came from the great grandson of Henry Ford, Edsel Ford II who was, at the time, the assistant manager of Ford Australia. His idea was to paint the excess cars in a similar way to what many American race cars were using at the time.
The 400 coupes were painted white and the blue stripes were added or in the case of the versions that already had the bold blue paint job, the stripes were masked out and a coat of white was painted over the top.
Ford Australia sent these new Cobras to their premium Ford dealers around the country and the results were nothing short of remarkable. The new paint job on these coupes were an instant hit and they were snapped up relatively quickly by extremely enthusiastic buyers.
While the XC Cobra was a popular road car and relatively famous on the race track, driven by the likes of Ford Icon Allan Moffat, it also served the very important role of the Official Track Car at the 1978 Hardie Ferodo 1000.
There were reportedly 7 or 8 versions of this Track Car present during the 1978 running of the Great Race performing official duties. While the iconic Cobra colour scheme is still present, additions such as the lighting rack on the roof and track car decoration ensured that this car could grab your attention when it was needed.
