The very first Le Mans 24 hour race was run in 1923. Dunlop supported the event from the beginning, erecting a public footbridge at Pontlieue and placing advertising around the hairpin. This footbridge was kept until 1928 when the track was changed and Dunlop built a huge tyre, straddling the circuit just past the pits, on what was then called Avenue Dunlop. It did not function as a bridge and when the organizers banned advertising Dunlop were forced to remove the structure.
Rules changed after World War II and in 1952 Dunlop built an 18 meter wide bridge at the end of the pit straight. The bridge's sidewalls carried the Branding Dunlop Fort - Fort meaning strong or durable in French whilst also alluding to the Birmingham factory, Fort Dunlop, where tyres are still produced.
Track development in 1955, designed to improve safety, included track widening and moving the Dunlop Bridge past the bend after the pit straight. The bend itself became known as Dunlop Curve. Since then, the bridge's appearance changed with the wording becoming Dunlop SP Sport and the addition of the famous Flying D logo and later L'Esprit de Competition. In 1978 the bridge was rebuilt to meet new safety standards. Its 50 meter arc is 13 meters high and weighs 70 tons. It can withstand 200kph winds and the weight of over 1,000 people.
The Dunlop Bridge generated so much enthusiasm that others have been built at circuits around the world. At the Donnington Park Circuit in England, Mantrop Park in Sweden, Sugo and Suzuka in Japan as well as venues such as Bercy, the Dunlop Bridges are famous, blending in with, and enhancing, the motor racing atmosphere. Spark is producing this famous track feature to enhance your dioramas and shelf displays in two scales.
