Mercedes-Benz introduced its new line of W114/115 mid-priced sedans in 1967 but the first ones didn¡¯t hit dealers until January, 1968 leading to the /8 designation which simply denoted the first year on sale. For Mercedes, the rear-drive unibody design was fairly conventional except for the diagonal swing-axle rear suspension that improved road handling without sacrificing ride comfort. In November, 1968 Mercedes added a coupe to the lineup, the company¡¯s first ever in its mid-priced class.

Several engines were offered, the most powerful being a 2.8-liter twin-cam inline-six that debuted in April, 1972 in the 280 C. It made 160 hp with a carburetor and 185 hp with optional fuel injection. With a flatter windshield, a striking pillarless-hardtop design, and a roof lowered by 45 mm (1.8 inches), the coupes sold well. Mercedes built a total 67,048 of all types before production ended in 1976.
