The new 3.5 litre rules meant that insufficient numbers of the new category cars were entered for Le Mans in 1991.
The FIA consequently varied the rules and as a result, in the case of TWR Jaguar and Sauber Mercedes, their 3.5 litre cars - respectively the XJR-14 and C291 - were withdrawn and instead they raced the proven XJR-12 and C11 cars.
