The BMW 8-series, in-plant called E31, entered the market in1989. It is an upper-class coupé designed and produced by the car manufacturer BMW. The 8-series, although larger in its dimensions and also more expensive, replaced the 6-series (production series E24). The main competitors of the E31 were the coupé versions C126 and C140 of the S-Class, which were both produced by Mercedes-Benz. The 8-series was only available as a coupé. Prototypes of a convertible were developed, but because of the missing C pillar, stability was lacking. Until the end of 2004 three ridable convertibles existed.

In the beginning the E31 was only available with a twelve cylinder engine (labelled: 850i), which produced 221 kW (300HP) and was known form the BMW 750i. In the autumn of 1992 the production series was complemented upwards by the 850Csi with a powerful 279 kW (380 HP) twelve cylinder engine. This version was offered with a six speed manual and a movable rear axle. Half a year later the 840Ci followed (eight cylinder, 210 kW/ 286HP). It was the new base model and the first V8-coupe', since the BMW 3200 CS, which was produced in the sixties. The 850i was renamed to 850Ci and in 1994, this version received a modernised twelve cylinder engine with 240 kW (326 HP).

Until its abandonment in 1999, the E31 was the most expensive vehicle out of the BMW range. The sales success of the E31 was far behind expectations, in ten years only around 30,000 cars were produced.
