The development of the production series W140 began in 1982 and as always at Mercedes-Benz it was continued under extremely difficult conditions until 1988. During the concluding test-drives of the proto types, which were done at the Nuerburgring, after a coupe of laps it became clear, that the chassis was neither capable of coping with the high weight, nor did it manage the immense power. In addition to that the brakes and tyres were also under dimensioned at that time. As a result significant changes concerning the chassis and wheel case had to be made, that were not only expensive, but also used up substantial amounts of time. The production start of the W140 limousine, which was planned for autumn of 1989, was postponed to spring of 1991, despite overtime and weekend work.
In march 1991 the company presented the W140 S-Class at the Geneva car show. A newly developed double suspension front axle functions as front wheel suspension. The aim is to reach an audible and perceptible oscillation through the decoupling of the chassis. The comfort is crucially improved, through the usage of isolated glass plates, which were used for the first time ever in a passenger car. The daily noise from other cars or pedestrians is kept outside of the car, which guarantees a relaxed drive. The improved anti blocking system (ABS) leads to shorter gaps and softer pulsation of the breaking pedal. The servo-assisted steering regulates, independently of the current speed, the servo support. During for example the act of parking the steering wheel can be manoeuvred with the small finger only.
The 6,0 litre-V12 engine is a completely new development and in addition to that it was not only the first ever produced personal carrier twelve cylinder engine by Mercedes-Benz, but also with a power rating of 300 kW (408 HP) the most powerful Mercedes-Benz passenger car engine at the time. In June of 1993 the classification was changed. The “S” was put in front of the three-digit number.
During the only seven and a half years of production a significant change in the buying behaviour of the customers was recognized. While in the beginning the lower motorized cars were bought in combination with the shorter wheel base of the SE-saloon (W 140), the customers, near the end of the production cycle and indifferent of the motorization, tended more towards the long wheel based SEL-version (V 140). This meant for example that only 9,5% of all ordered S-Class saloons equipped with a V12 engine were ordered in the short wheel base version. Even from the base model S 320 greater quantities of the long wheel base car bodies were ordered from 1993 on.
