Pikes Peak Auto Hillclimb is one of the oldest, hairiest auto races worldwide. 12.42 miles, covering 5000 vertical ft. of terrain, some 156 turns and awesome guardrail-less sheer cliffs provide a real challenge.
In 1987, no less than 10 European Group B rally cars, some even radically modified beyond Group B form, appeared at Pikes Peak in Colorado for the 65th Race To The Clouds. On race day the prime topic was if Bobby Unser's 1986 record of 11 minutes 9.22 would last out the afternoon? When the dust had settled, victory belonged to Walter Röhrl. He had obliterated Unser's record by 21.37 sec, finishing in 10:47.85, beating runner up Vatanen by 7 sec.
