The Lancia Delta was based on a five door hatch-back road going production car. In order for its use in the WRC and to meet the World Rally Championship requirements changes needed. These included changing the drive train to full time All Wheel Drive from previous Front wheel drive and adding a Turbo Engine. Lancia next had to produce a minimum of 5,000 road going versions of the car in order to meet the WRC Group A qualification.
Between 1987 and 1991 Lancia Delta won six different rallies participation in the WRC.
