This Weeks Releases

This week Biante will release the 1:18 LH Torana SLR/R5000 L34 driven by Colin Bond and Bob Skelton in the 1974 Bathurst 1000.

A87465 - 1:18 HOLDEN LH TORANA SL/R5000 L34 Colin Bond / Bob Skelton - BATHURST (1974)

This 1:18 scale replica of Colin Bond’s 1974 Bathurst HDT Torana L34. Each of these limited edition models - 2,100 pieces - comes with an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity hand signed by Colin Bond, and as an additional treat, the accompanying Biante brochure relating to this model is written with the assistance of, and also signed by, Harry Firth, period manager of the Holden Dealer Team.

Harry Firth, as manager of the HDT, was involved in adapting a new V8 Torana to touring car racing. His plans for Holden to produce a V8-engined LJ Torana had been shelved following the ‘Supercar Scare’ in 1972, but with the introduction of new rules in 1973 and the new model LH Torana in 1974, things were about to change. Peter Brock wrapped up the 1974 Australian Touring Car Championship with a combination of six-cylinder XU-1 and the new V8-powered LH Torana SL/R5000. But, there was more to come from Holden and HDT the SL/R5000 soon evolved into the limited edition L34 Option, a production homologation version that featured a Repco-modified engine.

The L34 had its racing debut in August 1974 at the opening round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship (AMC) in Adelaide, and whilst it was not without mechanical drama for the HDT cars, Colin Bond held on to win the event. The Hardie-Ferodo 1000 at Bathurst was the setting for the third round of the 1974 AMC. Allan Moffat and his stunning Brut 33 Falcon attracted much of the pre-race Bathurst publicity, but it would be the HDT Toranas of Brock and Bond that qualified fastest of all. In the early laps of the race, Colin Bond held the lead, but Peter Brock soon caught up to overtake Bond and that's how things looked set to stay.

HDT’s problems started after half-distance, with co-driver Bob Skelton pitting Bond’s car with oil smoke issues. Colin Bond took over driving the #2 HDT car but the smoking worsened. Officials waved the black flag and Colin was soon back in the pits. He returned to the pits again a few laps later to spend more time stationary whilst mechanics diagnosed the car’s oil leaks, the outcome of which turned out to be a lack of ‘Loctite’ on the sump bolt threads. And, while all this was going on, race leader Peter Brock’s #1 HDT car decided to also take up smoking, but in a bigger way. At lap 118, Brocky’s car was retired to the back of the pits with terminal engine failure. Colin Bond did return his L34 to the fray, but stopped twice more, initially to repair a brake problem and then to replace a deflated right front tyre. The race to victory in wet conditions was fought out amongst the privateers, with John Goss in his XA Falcon GT coming home ahead of Bob Forbes in his Torana L34. As for Bondy, well, after all of the afternoon’s dramas, he still managed to score fourth place outright.

Orders for this product will be accepted through the website after 2pm Perth time Wednesday 12th September 2007.

Biante Touring Car Masters

Seven time Bathurst winner, and Biante licensed driver, Jim Richards is set to join the 2007 BIANTE Touring Car Masters Series at the Sandown 500 round running across September 14-16.

Round Five of the BIANTE Touring Car Masters Series will see Richards behind the wheel of a stunning 1969 Camaro previously campaigned by owner and Series regular Tony Hunter.

Hunter has invited Richards to take the wheel of the 350 Chev powered beast while he will race his familiar Sunliner RV sponsored HQ Holden. Though it will be a guest appearance for Richards at Sandown, it will be only the beginning of a future involvement in the fledgling Series.

In between a busy schedule of Tarmac rallies, corporate drive days and fielding a Carrera Cup Car for Alex Davison, Richards has spent the last couple of years steadily building up his own BIANTE Touring Car  -  a 1964 Ford Falcon Rallye Sprint that should be ready for next season, with Jim already having purchased a license to run the full Series in 2008.

As for Richards’s BIANTE debut at Sandown, Hunter is equally excited. Jim’s perfect for the job. I am thrilled about having a driver of his stature in the car and I am sure he will put on a fantastic show for the big crowd we are sure to have at the Sandown 500. It will be invaluable for the Series to have Jim mixing it up with the regular drivers. Everyone has such great respect for his awesome skill in any type of car or event.

Whilst Jim will continue to contest Tarmac Rallies, Richards shares the enthusiasm of Hunter for the BIANTE Touring Car Masters Series.

I am very excited to get behind the wheel of the Camaro, I’m sure it will be a rocket in a straight line, but how it turns in and tries  to put down all that power may be a different story!

I have to thank Tony (Hunter) a lot for this awesome opportunity and I can't wait until next year when I can do the entire BIANTE Series in my own car.

The Camaro has already shown its potential with Hunter running the Chev at Phillip Islands final round last year. A barnstorming performance from Hunter in the final race saw him set quickest race lap on the way to a fine second place behind eventual BIANTE Series winner Paul Stubber, also in a`69 Camaro.

Jim Richards is no stranger to the type of classic muscle car now filling the BIANTE Touring Car Masters grids. Many Aussie race fans will still remember his famous Sidchrome Mustang that saw Richards become one of the real stars of Sports Sedans in the mid `70s.

With seven Bathurst wins, four Australian Touring Car Championships, three Nations Cup titles, two Australian GT Championships, two AMSCAR titles, a NASCAR title and an amazing eight Targa Tasmania victories already to his credit, Jim Richards is sure to be contender when Round Five of the 2007 BIANTE Touring Car Masters rolls into Sandown this weekend.

You will find more information about the Biante Touring Car Masters Series at www.touringcarmasters.com.au

Please find the top three standings below.
