V8 Supercars - Bahrain - Desert 400

With a brand new circuit far away from home, the inaugural Desert 400 this week in Bahrain could be a wildcard in the fight for the 2006 V8 Supercar Championship Series. Rick Kelly leads the Championship to the tune of 73 points after a successful round in Tasmania. While the circuit itself will be brand new for all of the V8 Supercar teams, many engineers and drivers believe that things will play out similar to last year’s trip to Shanghai in China.

And, two of Holden’s leading drivers, Garth Tander and Todd Kelly, may have gained a minor advantage in that they raced on the track earlier this year in a ProAm race supporting the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix. Garth Tander actually won the Celebrity Challenge event alongside five-time Olympic gold medal rower Steve Redgrave in a field of 20 race-modified HSV Clubsport cars that were manufactured specifically for a one make Middle East series that will this week support the V8 Supercars event.

With only the Bahrain and Phillip Island rounds remaining, we wish Rick the best of luck in his chase for the 2006 title.

This week Biante is releasing the 1:18 scale Holden 45-215 / FX driven by Leo Geoghegan in the 1956 New South Wales Sedan Car Championship.   Part of the significance of this car is the fact that Leo's win marks the first Championship title for Holden in sedan / touring car racing in Australia. SPA 180001 - 1:18 AUDI R8 2005 LeMans 24hr (Winner) - Lehto / Werner / Kristensen (2005)

CMC

Lastly this week, a new model from CMC has just arrived.  This is the 1:18 scale Maserati Tipo 61 (Birdcage). The original 'Birdcage' has a charmingly graceful body designed by the mastermind Giulio Alfieri, who integrated a light frame of barely 30 kg with more than 200 single pieces of tube. Because of this engineering innovation, the Maserati Tipo 60/61 acquired the legendary nickname Birdcage. Only 23 units were made during the years from 1959 through 1961.

The American Lucky Casner was one of the most successful owners of the Birdcage Tipo 61. In May 1960, Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney won the 1,000-km race of Nürburgring. With the starting number 5, they accomplished an outstanding victory in the pouring rain against keen competition. Only one year later, the Camoradi Team (Casner Motor Racing Division) repeated the winning record with Casner and Gregory as the drivers. These consecutive victories added new glory to Maserati and sustained its everlasting top position in the illustrious circle of racing car manufacturers.

This model is composed of 1,140 single parts, 507 of which are made of stainless steel, copper, and brass. This model is an exact replica of the winning car of Moss/ Gurney. What is extraordinary about its build is the adherence of its body to a cage-like framework as if it were a second skin. While looking at the exact details of this model, you are likely to feel transported
back to the adventurous experience of racing in old times.

M-047 - 1:18 MASERATI TIPO 61 (Birdcage) Moss / Gurney - NURBURGRING 1000kms (1960)

All of the above listed models will be made available for purchase on the website from 2pm Perth time Wednesday 22nd November 2006.

Next Weeks Releaes

Biante

Next week Biante will be releasing the 1:18 scale Ford XY Falcon driven by John French to second place in the 1972 HARDIE-FERODO 500.  Many people remember John as Dick Johnson's co-driver in the 1980s, helping pilot the blue and green XD/XE Falcons around Mt Panorama. Well, John's driving career goes way back to the 1950s - maybe some older collectors are aware that he and Leo Geoghegan were a couple of tearaways in their FJ Holdens ! John French raced the XY Falcon GTHO for the factory and as a privateer, and in the latter guise he did a remarkable job to finish as runner-up to Peter Brock in the last of the 500 mile events at Bathurst.

A87210 - 1:18 FORD XY FALCON GTHO John French - BATHURST (1972)

This item will be available from 2pm Perth time Wednesday the 29th November 2006 through the Biante website.
