Kyosho 1:12 scale - Shelby AC Cobra 427 S/C
Kyosho have announced that they are in the process of developing the Shelby AC Cobra 427 S/C in sensationally detailed 1:12 scale ... so, you might like to add this one to your Watchlist !
The following is a condensed history piece on these rare and increasingly valuable Anglo-American sports cars :
The Shelby AC Cobra cars came about as a joint venture between Shelby American in California, Ford Motor Co in Michigan, and AC Cars in Surrey, England. Two prototype cars were ready in February 1962 and then shipped out from England to California. Manufacture of the AC Cobra Mk1 commenced in England in July 1962, these first cars featuring Ford's baby 260ci V8 engine. The whole concept acceptance by Ford was related to an image program supported by motor racing.
By the time that the AC Cobra Mk3 road car was developed in late 1964, featuring the massive 427ci engine, the manufacturing program was extended to incorporate the building of a requisite 100 competition-spec cars to comply with FIA regulations for the 1965 European GT Championship. Through January and February 1965, only 53 competition cars were completed and the chase for homologation ran out of time. Shelby would have to race his 1964-spec cars in Europe, and he was now stuck with 50-odd race-specification Mk3 427 roadsters to sell.
Enter now the Cobra 427 S/C (Street / Competition), whereby Shelby converted many of the Cobra Mk3 pure competition cars to an intermediate street / competition specification, replacing bronzed suspension bushings with more compliant rubber components yet retaining many of the competition car items such as the 40 gallon fuel tank, front and rear jacking points, and the signature side exit exhaust system.
The building of street specification Mk3 427 cars was halted in 1966, with Ford withdrawing its support of the Cobra program ... ownership of the Cobra nameplate rested with Ford ... however, AC Cars in England continued to produce a small-block engined car based on the Cobra Mk3, simply called the AC 289, which they ultimately phased out of production in 1968.
