THE INSIDE WORKINGS OF THE DTM
Only V8 engines with a cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees, a maximum of four litres total cylinder capacity and a maximum of two valves per cylinder are admitted to the DTM. The intake system must be equipped with two restrictors with a diameter of 28mm at maximum.
Two weeks before the season opener, three engines for two registered participants each, are sealed. They have to share the engines throughout the entire season. A typical DTM engine produces around 470BHP. In the currently running 2007 DTM season, the prestigious brands Audi and Mercedes-Benz take part in the competition, with their vehicles typed A4 and C-Class respectively.
Weight: The minimum weight of a DTM vehicle, including driver, racing suit and helmet amounts to 1,070 kilograms. Cars from 2005 are allowed to weigh 1,040 kilograms and from 2006 1,060 kilograms respectively. Because of the fact that in 2007 cars take part in the races come from three different age group specifications, the basic weights have been defined differently.
Point system: Points are awarded for drivers finishing from 1st until 8th place and corresponding to the FIA code ... 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points are distributed from race winner at 10 points to 8th place at 1 point.
Overall Results: Two yearly valuations - or titles - exist in the DTM. The title “DTM Champion” is awarded to an individual driver, who at season end has collected the most points of any driver in the series. The title “DTM-Team-Champion” is assigned to a team, whose two drivers have accumulated the most points amongst all the two-driver team combinations in the series.
